COVINA , CA — In response to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf States, Christian Community Credit Union (CCCU) donated over $50,000 to various disaster relief efforts. The funds were distributed to support the relief efforts of the American Baptist Churches USA , the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel (ICFG), World Vision, the Salvation Army and the American Red Cross. The amount was generated from CCCU members’ use of their credit and debit card – “The Cards that Give to Missions & Ministries.” CCCU employees also responded to the need and contributed $2,500 through a matching program offered by CCCU’s Board of Directors.

“We wanted to extend our hand of help in a tangible way in support of the victims of Hurricane Katrina during this devastating time in their lives,” said John T. Walling, CCCU President/CEO. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the hurricane victims and their families. We trust that the donation will go a long way in meeting their physical and spiritual needs.”

Donated funds will be used to provide – medicine, shelter, health and school kits, baby kits and gift cards.

In appreciation for CCCU’s donation to ICFG’s disaster relief, Senior Supervisor Larry Spousta said, “We thank the board and members of the Christian Community Credit Union and we extend the hand of partnership in this endeavor to see lives changed in the rebuilding and reestablishing the lives of the hurricane victims.”

A portion of CCCU’s donation went to ABCUSA’s “One Great Hour of Sharing” who will work with Church World Service to provide Gift of the Heart kits containing basic medical and toiletry supplies. An amount was also directed to the American Baptist Churches of the South (ABCOTS).

“ABCUSA National Ministries and ABCOTS are formulating short and long-term strategies toward transitional and permanent efforts throughout the nation to resettle displaced persons with the help and generosity of the American Baptist family” wrote National Ministries Executive Director Rev. Dr. Aidsand F. Wright –Riggins III and ABCOTS Executive Minister Rev Dr. Walter L. Parrish II.

“All our members have a part in this disaster donation,” adds Walling. “They can feel good knowing that whenever they use their credit or debit card, they are also actively participating in the credit union movement’s philosophy of ‘People Helping People’.”

CCCU’s unique credit and debit card program donates a portion of the interchange income (the amount merchants pay to card issuers) to mission and ministry projects. To date, CCCU has donated over
$1.5 million to national and international ministry projects, disaster relief efforts, church planting, college and seminary scholarships and other faith-based projects.

With over 28,000 members worldwide, Christian Community Credit Union has served the financial needs of the Christian community, affiliate organizations and their members for almost 50 years.
