Chuck T. Hughes, Jr., Long-Time Board Member Dies
San Dimas, CA - June 6, 2011
Christian Community Credit Union Board Member, Rev. Charles “Chuck” T. Hughes, Jr. passed away May 2, 2011. He died at sea while on a cruise ship near the island of Aruba. At the age of 40, Chuck became a member of Christian Community Credit Union’s Board of Directors and served continuously for 44 years. He is survived by his wife Margie, their four children, seven grandchildren, a sister and a brother.
As a member of the Board, Chuck was voted Chairman six times and also served as Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. He was currently the Board Secretary. During his service, the Credit Union experienced tremendous growth from $2.5 million in assets to over $520 million. He was instrumental in expanding the Credit Union’s product and services such as “The Cards that Give to Missions,” home loans, investment services and more. While serving on the Board’s building committee, Chuck played a key role in the purchase of the corporate office in San Dimas as well as the remodeling of the Covina branch.
Chuck was a born leader who always had powerful words of encouragement and inspiration for others.
“Carpe diem!” and “Let’s do it!” are some of the phrases he often quoted.
“Chuck was a mentor, encourager and a dear friend to me,” says John Walling, Christian Community Credit Union President/CEO. “His leadership brought the Credit Union to where it is today. I thank God for his life and his service to the Credit Union through the years.”
Chuck was born on December 12, 1926 in Los Angeles, CA. As a young boy, he read adventure stories and dreamed of seeing the world. He realized his dream when he joined the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war, he spent time in Japan and China. Following an honorable discharge from the Navy, he earned an AA Degree from JohnMuirCollege and later received a BA Degree in English Literature and Speech from OccidentalCollege. He was a serious actor, singer and radio announcer who performed in numerous plays in college, several Christian films and Christian radio.
To prepare for his calling in the ministry, he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1955. Chuck loved to Preach from God's word, and always depended upon the Holy Spirit to guide his ministry. He was ordained as Minister in 1956, and served as a Senior Pastor at these churches:
• 1955 - 1961 First Baptist Church of Chatsworth, CA
• 1961 - 1965 Western Avenue Baptist Church, Harbor City, CA
• 1965 - 1971 Judson Baptist Church, San Bernardino, CA
• 1971 - 1995 First Baptist Church of Anaheim now Portico Church Anaheim, CA
• 1995 - 1996 First Baptist Church of Laguna Hills now Grace Hills Church, CA (Interim Pastor)
To his four children, Chuck was a devoted father. He taught them to love the Lord and to enjoy reading, education, camping, backpacking, and skiing. He also loved to travel especially on cruise ships. He and his wife Margie have visited 56 countries and hosted many travel tours including the Holy Land. Chuck will be greatly missed by his family, friends, colleagues and co-laborers in the Lord’s work.
